Flights with US Airways:

An overview of US Airways

image of US AirwaysUS Airways is positioned in the market as a cost effective airline, and offer rates that are considered to be some of most competitive in the aviation industry today. It is the sixth biggest airline company in the United States of America and is wholly owned by the US Airways Group Inc.

Initially U.S. Airways was called the All American Aviation Company. This airline company was founded as a mail carrier way back in 1939 by the DuPont brothers. Some 10 years later the company moved away from the airmail service and shifted their focus to passenger services instead. To reflect this change in business focus, the name of the company was changed to All American Airways. Another renaming was done in 1952 when the name was changed to Allegheny Airlines. Expansion continued throughout the 1960s and acquisitions such as Lake Central Airlines and Mohawk Airlines followed in subsequent years.

However, the airline was unable to bear the cost of increased responsibility and suffered a poor reputation on account of bad customer service. In 1979 the name of the airlines was changed to USAir and their corporate headquarters were moved from Pittsburgh to Crystal City. It took time to repair their tarnished image, but their effort to improve their services was rewarded during the late 1980s when the airline started expanding rapidly. During this time they also acquired Pacific Southwest Airlines and Piedmont Airlines.

Throughout the 90s expansion continued: U.S. Airways expanded operations to European cities like London, Frankfurt and Paris and in 1996, officially changed their name to U.S. Airways with a new branding.

U.S. Airways has a frequent flyer program known as Dividend Miles. Through this programme passengers can accrue points and miles when they fly with U.S. Airways or with any partner airlines belonging to the Star Alliance.
