The Tourist Attractions of Herning:

Herning was established in the early 1800s and grew as a centre for commerce for the region around it. Later it became important for textile weaving, and it was granted market town rights in 1913. Today Herning is still a centre for commerce and in terms of tourism it’s very well known for its exhibitions, being home to the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia.

Messecenter Herning

Open since 1954 the huge Messecenter Herning is the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, hosting exhibitions and trade shows, as well as entertainment such as concerts, sporting events and theatre. Around 900,000 people pass through its doors each year, and after being expanded four times since first construction, it now covers 130 acres, or 510,000 square metres.

This is not just one space though. The centre is divided into several different spaces that can be used according to the size of each event. The venue with the largest capacity is the Outdoor Arena, capable of hosting 50,000 people. Look out for big name acts performing here, as in the past the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay and Genesis have performed here.

Herning Art Museum

The exhibition centre is not the only attraction in Herning though, there are other things to see and do here. Herning Art Museum is one attraction, housed within an attractive building dating from 1965. The building has an inner courtyard with a massive ceramic painting. Part of this museum is dedicated to two internationally acclaimed Danish artists, Carl-Henning Pederson and Else Alfelt.

Elia Sculpture

Said to be the largest sculpture in Northern Europe, Elia is a sculpture designed by Ingvar Cronhammar here in Herning. The sculpture is a large dome with a diameter of 60 metres and includes four columns that stand 32 metres high fro the top of the dome. It’s a very industrial, futuristic sculpture that wouldn’t look out of place in a science fiction movie!

There is a viewing platform on the sculpture that allows visitors to see some of the surrounds, and at random intervals a fifth column, which has a gas burner equipped, shoots out a flame!

When Should You Visit?:

Herning has mild temperatures in the summer, getting up to average highs of around 21C in August, but there can be days when the daily high far exceeds this. Rainfall is fairly constant across the year, with slightly less in the spring and summer than in the winter.
