Debrecen Flights:
Flights to Debrecen
Debrecen is Hungary’s second largest city and it’s the capital of the Northern Great Plain region of the country. Debrecen may not be as popular as Budapest as a tourist destination but this city does have tourist attractions of its own.
The local Debrecen International Airport (airport code: DEB) is not currently handling any international flights to Debrecen so you will have to arrange your flight to the Budapest Ferihegy International Airport (code: BUD) instead. There are regular trains from Budapest to Debrecen. Most flights to Debrecen are going to have 1 connection and will run between 18 and 20 hours long. Iberia stops in Madrid, South African Airways stops in Cairo and so does Egyptair.

The Tourist Attractions of Debrecen:
Being Hungary’s second largest city you would expect there to be all kinds of tourist attractions here, though unfortunately this isn’t the case. Those tourists who are looking for an alternative to Budapest will be sorely disappointed with Debrecen, but if you prefer to rub shoulders with locals rather than other tourists from around the world Debrecen is a good choice. There are some things to see and do here after all, but more than a short break visit and you may be struggling to keep yourself occupied.
Protestant Great Church of Debrecen
The major landmark in Debrecen is the Protestant Great Church. Situated right in the city centre the church was built between 1805 and 1824 and is in the Neo-classical style. It is the largest protestant church in Hungary and also the symbol of the Protestant Church for the country. For tourists this is a great building to visit as not only can you tour the inside but you can go up into the tower to see the largest bell in Hungary, and experience the excellent city views.
Deri Museum
The main museum and largest in Debrecen is the Deri Museum. This museum focuses largely on the art of Mihaly Munkacsy, a Hungarian painter who specialised in large scale biblical paintings, but there’s more here than this. It’s a national museum and also includes nature of the region, art by other artists, and a collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts.
Other Museums in Debrecen
Debrecen has a number of other museums too and while the art museums may only appeal to those who have a keen interest in art, the others include the Debrecen Literary Museum, the Post Museum, and the Laszlo Hollo Memorial Museum which is situated within a pretty park.
Debrecen City Park
Debrecen has several public parks but the City Park (Nagyerdo) is the main one. This very large park features walking trails and plenty of places to sit and relax, plus there’s an assortment of other attractions in here too. These include an amusement park with around 15 different rides, and a resort with water park, swimming pool and more.
When Should You Visit?:
With cool to cold winters Debrecen is usually most popular with tourists in the summer months when temperatures can be really quite warm and pleasant. The only drawback with visiting during the summer is the higher levels of rainfall. June, July and August are the hottest months when average highs range between 25 and 27C. Spring and autumn are also warm, and with lesser rainfall, perhaps this is a good time to visit Debrecen.
