image of BalzersThe village of Balzers is situated in southern Liechtenstein and is best known as being the home of Schloss Gutenberg, an attractive hilltop castle.

Since there are no airports in Liechtenstein, you won’t be able to get a flight to Balzers directly, however it is only 50 kilometres to the St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (airport code: ACH) across the border in Switzerland. From Johannesburg, most airlines have 2 stops in their flights to Balzers. Lufthansa goes through Frankfurt and Vienna, and so does Austrian Airlines. The Tourist Attractions of Balzers:

Like most villages and communities in Liechtenstein, Balzers is small and there really isn’t enough to see or do here to take up more than a day or two. For this reason many tourists can stay in Balzers and use it as a base to see the rest of this pretty, yet tiny country.

Schloss Gutenberg

Schloss (or Castle) Gutenberg is the main tourist attraction of Balzers. It’s perched up on a small hill overlooking the town and dates from medieval times, around the 1200s. It was the home of the noble Gutenberg family and was restored from a ruin in the early 1900s. There have been more recent renovations on the castle including the chapel and rose gardens which are open to the public throughout the year. During the summer there are often cultural events taking place in the grounds, so look out for these while you’re visiting Balzers.

The slopes of the hill on which the castle stands are really quite steep and rocky, so you may be surprised to see several vineyards with rows of grape vines growing here. They have been growing grapes for wine here for many years though!

Church of St Nicholas

Along with the castle, the main attraction of Balzers is the parish church, called St. Nicholas. The church is such a popular attraction because it is so beautiful, and with the castle and mountains in the background, this is one of Liechtenstein’s photographic treats! The church looks older than its 1912 construction date, but this is thanks to the neo-Romanesque architecture.

Hotels in Balzers

Despite being so small, Balzers does have a hotel for tourists to stay in. The Hofbalzers Hotel has 26 guest rooms that are modern and well equipped, and there’s an extensive breakfast buffet available in the mornings. The hotel also has a full restaurant (specialising in Italian food) and bar, as well as fitness facilities and a steam bath.

When Should You Visit?:

The best time for sightseeing in Balzers is during the summer. Temperatures aren’t hot, but the weather is usually warm with average highs in the low 20’s C in July. Unfortunately summer is the slightly wetter time of year too, so bring along a raincoat or umbrella so that the rain doesn’t spoil your visit. If you come in the winter you’ll get cool and snowy weather, but then you can enjoy some of the local skiing.
