Public buses run often on this route, so you can get between Riga and Panevezys easily. You can get a flight to Panevezys arriving in Riga with South African Airways that connects in Frankfurt, or one with Turkish Airlines that stops in Istanbul. KLM also goes to Riga, and has a stop-over in Amsterdam for their route.

The Tourist Attractions of Panevezys:
Panevezys was first mentioned in 1503 when building rights were granted, though it wasn’t until 1837 that it was granted city status. During the period in between it was known as a royal town, and from the 19th century Panevezys really began to grow thanks to the industrial revolution.
Panevezys Narrow Gauge Railway
One of the popular attractions for Panevezys is its narrow gauge railway. The railway station in Panevezys is quite unique for Lithuania as it’s the only railway that can accommodate both narrow gauge and Russian gauge trains. The narrow gauge service is over 100 years old and takes tourists on trips to Anyksciai, making this the longest narrow gauge route in Europe.
Panevezys Museums
A major museum for Panevezys is the Museum of Ethnography which displays the cultural and historical heritage of Panevezys. There is also an Art Gallery where usually each year it hosts about 20 different exhibitions as well as lectures and seminars on art, literature and culture. Panevezys also has a Photography Gallery where 30 exhibitions are hosted each year, so there’s always something new to see in these museums.
Theatres in Panevezys
Panevezys also has a number of theatres, making this a good city to visit if you are interested in culture and the arts. The Puppet Wagon Theatre is the only one of its kind in Europe, and during the winter it stays in the centre of Panevezys giving performances. In the summer months the wagon becomes mobile and gives puppet performances in the local villages.
The Panevezys Drama Theatre is a major theatre and it was established by a famous Lithuanian theatre director, Juozas Miltinis. You can see a sculpture of him nearby to the theatre.
Cido Arena
One of the major landmarks of Panevezys is the Cido Arena. This is a multi-purpose arena that was opened in 2008 and hosts track cycling events, concerts and basketball games. Check their schedule to see if there are any events on while you’re visiting Panevezys.
When Should You Visit?:
Visit during the summer months and you should have warm temperatures to enjoy in Panevezys. It never gets really hot here, so expect average highs around 18C in July and August. Winters can be quite cold in comparison, so this isn’t a good time to visit. The average high in January is well below freezing at -7C.
