The Tourist Attractions of Maastricht:

There’s an argument going on between Maastricht and another Dutch city, Nijmegen, as to which one is the oldest city in the Netherlands. According to some sources Maastricht may not be the oldest settlement with ‘city’ status, but it is possibly the oldest settlement and longest inhabited settlement in the Netherlands. Either way, Maastricht is a city that’s full of history and has plenty to offer visiting tourists.

Maastricht City Fortifications
Maastricht has some impressive city fortifications which date back as far as the 13th century with the town gate, the oldest one in the Netherlands. Walls from the medieval times also still exist in Maastricht as well as further fortifications that were made during the 17th and 18th centuries. From the 19th century is Fort Willem, while the Casements underneath the city offer a fascinating look at underground tunnels and can be toured as part of a guided tour group.

Sint Pietersberg
Just outside the main city the Sint Pietersberg area of Maastricht also has a fort, Fort Sint Pieter. The whole area stands on a hill and the fort itself, which was originally built in the 18th century, was fully restored in 2008.

Also in this part of Maastricht is another popular attraction, the Caves of Sint Pietersberg which are open for guided tours.

Vrijthof Square
Maastricht has two impressive city squares, the most famous of which is Vrijthof Square. This spacious square features a couple of major sights including the Basilica of Saint Servatius which was constructed from the 11th century onwards. There’s also the Gothic style church of Saint Janskerk with its red tower.

Market Square
The Market Square is the other major square in Maastricht and it was made almost entirely vehicle free when it was restored a few years ago. The Town Hall is located here, as is a new shopping centre called Mosae Forum.

Maastricht Museums
Maastricht has a good selection of museums too, focusing on art, natural history and other subjects. These include the Bonnefantenmuseum features contemporary and Old Masters art, with an emphasis on 16th and 17th century Flemish painters.

The Natuurhistrisch Museum meanwhile focuses on the natural history of the region surrounding Maastricht, with fossils and all sorts of displays that are bound to appeal to children as well as adults.
