The Tourist Attractions of Vilamoura:
Vilamoura Marina
At the heart of Vilamoura is its huge marina. Capable of berthing over 1,000 different vessels Vilamoura Marina is the place to come for boat trips and more. The resort area has spread out from the marina so there are hotels and restaurants everywhere, including many in the marina locality. As well as general boat trips you can charter boats from the marina and go fishing, or make use of the numerous sporting opportunities on offer here such as jet skiing. Boat trips to the nearby coastal caves are popular too. Vilamoura Marina really is the heart of the resort.
Vilamoura Beaches
What the marina isn’t any good for is swimming, but there are several great beaches in Vilamoura where you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing. There are two main beaches which are usually fairly packed during the height of summer, but they’re nice all the same.
Roman Ruins
Vilamoura isn’t just a place of modern buildings. You can combine your days on the beach with a visit to the Roman ruins which are right in the centre of Vilamoura. Explore the Cerro da Vila museum before seeing the ruins themselves to find out more about the history of this Roman site which was once a bathing complex. There are the remains of baths as well as tanks that were used for keeping fish during the 1st century AD.
The original settlement here at Vilamoura was actually once a Roman fishing town, so this explains the presence of fish tanks which would have held the fish that had been caught.
Golf in Vilamoura
Portugal’s Algarve is a popular destination for golfing due to the great climate you have here. The Vilamoura resort area is no exception and with a total of six golf courses in the area you could play a different course each day of your holiday!
When Should You Visit?:
Vilamoura is a destination you can visit throughout the year thanks to its warm to hot climate. Summers are most popular as there’s virtually no rainfall between June and September. The average high temperatures between these months vary from 25 to nearly 29C, but of course daytime highs will usually be higher than this. Visiting Vilamoura in the winter you’ll have to put up with some rainfall but mild temperatures make this a good time for sightseeing or golfing. The average high in January is 16C.
