The Tourist Attractions of Koniz:

Koniz has a long history, going back hundreds of years, and in fact there have been discoveries of evidence of settlements even as far back as the Bronze and Iron Ages. Remains of Roman villas have also been found, but the real origins of today’s city date back to the 1100s.

Despite this long history Koniz isn’t really considered to be a tourist destination as there isn’t too much that still remains in the way of historical attractions. It’s more of a business and residential city where many people live and commute into nearby Bern. Visitors can, however, do the same, using Koniz as a base and travelling the very short distance into Bern to see its many sights. This is a good idea if you’d like to stay in a quieter location, and not be constantly surrounded by thousands of other tourists, plus you may be able to find some more affordable accommodation options in Koniz when compared to staying in Bern itself.

Attractions in Bern
Koniz’ proximity to Bern means you can make an early start if you’re visiting the capital for a day, though you shouldn’t try to fit everything into just one day’s visit! Bern has many things to see and do, of which the old town is one of the top attractions. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous attractions is the time clock, or Zytglogge. Bern’s cathedral is a major landmark too, as is the Bundeshaus – the Federal Palace of Switzerland.

Things to do in Koniz
Koniz is by no means completely devoid of things to see and do! For culture and entertainment there are places to go for a night out, numerous restaurants to eat at, and stores for shopping in. If you enjoy the outdoors Koniz has several places where you can go for walks and picnics in the countryside, and there are in fact around 20 different spots where picnic tables are provided.

The major landmark for Koniz is the castle, or schloss. This isn’t as large as many counterparts but is an attractive landmark right in the middle of the city. The castle and the old St Peter and St Paul Church (now called the Reformed Church) can be toured by guided tour.

When Should You Visit?:

It’s cold and wet in the winter so this really isn’t a very good time to visit Koniz. Rainfall occurs throughout the year though, so can never truly be avoided altogether, but for warmer weather come between May and September when average highs range between 17 and 23.5C.
