The city of Chandler is situated in the state of Arizona, in the USA. Although a city in its own right Chandler has become one of Phoenix’ suburbs as Phoenix has grown substantially over the past few decades.

If you have a flight to Chandler from South Africa, you’ll have to land at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (airport code: PHX) in nearby Phoenix, because Chandler doesn’t have an airport of its own. It’s about a half hour drive away. British Airways has a flight to Chandler with one connection in London, and United also has a 1-stop route but with a transfer in New York instead. South African Airways goes a different way with 2 connections for their flight to Chandler, via London and Denver.

The Tourist Attractions in Chandler:

Chandler’s History
Chandler was founded in 1912 and named after its founder, a vet named Dr Alexander John Chandler. Chandler had already been planning the town for some years so when it was first established it quickly grew – the high school opened the same year and only the following year the town centre had been built and a golf course resort opened. Chandler High School is actually one of the oldest high schools in Arizona and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making this a potential attraction for visitors coming to Chandler.

Today Chandler is not full of tourist attractions but does have several things to see and do. Being close by to Phoenix tourists to the area could also consider staying in quieter Chandler and travelling in to Phoenix to enjoy its attractions.

Museums in Chandler
There are a couple of museums in Chandler including the Arizona Railway Museum which will certainly be of interest to visitors interested in trains and railways. The museum focuses on the more local railroads of Arizona and the Southwestern United States, and there’s an extensive collection here including rolling stock and artefacts.

Parks and Recreation in Chandler
One thing Chandler isn’t short of is parks and water parks! There are several recreation centres and city parks as well as kid’s water parks and pools. So if you’re visiting Chandler with children during the summer months these will be a welcome attraction for the children!

Chandler Fashion Center
Chandler is also a good city to visit for shopping. There are several shopping areas, including the historic downtown, but the Chandler Fashion Center is the largest mall in the city and the second largest in the greater Phoenix area. There are 180 or so stores here and many big name brands including Abercrombie and Fitch, Sears, Macy’s and more. There’s also a 20 screen cinema here, and a food court.

When Should You Visit?:

As with the rest of this part of Arizona Chandler has an arid climate and remains mild to hot all year round, with only a little in the way of rainfall. Summers are long and hot, peaking with average highs of around the high 30’s to low 40’s C during June, July and August. If you prefer cooler weather, visit Chandler during the winter when temperatures are still very pleasant.
