Scottsdale is a popular city in the state of Arizona, neighbouring the larger city of Phoenix. This vibrant city has a touch of the ‘West’ and offers lots in the way of arts and culture, dining and shopping.
About a 20 minute drive from Scottsdale is the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (airport code: PHX). The Scottsdale Municipal Airport (code: SCF) is closer, but only handles local air traffic. United Airlines and British Airways both have 1-stop flights to Scottsdale from South Africa, stopping in Frankfurt and London, respectively. You can also get a flight to Scottsdale with Virgin Atlantic, stopping twice, in London then Chicago. One other option is with South African Airways. They have a route through London and Denver.

The Tourist Attractions in Scottsdale:
Old Town
Although a very touristy part of Scottsdale the Old Town is still popular and worth a look, especially if you want to do some souvenir or gift shopping. There’s a good selection of these shops here, all situated within buildings that caricature most people’s impression of the old American West. Kids and adults will probably enjoy this part of Scottsdale if they’ve seen one too many Cowboy and Indian films!
Scottsdale Arts District
The benefit of visiting Old Town is that you’re right next door to Scottsdale Arts District. The city is renowned for its high number of galleries and museums, many of which are dedicated to western and Native American art.
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
For a change from the Native American and western themed art galleries there is the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. This is the only such permanent museum in the state of Arizona, and it’s located in the Old Town part of the city. It has works from around the world which are showcased in five galleries, and an outdoor sculpture garden.
Taliesin West
The former winter home of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the top tourist attractions in the whole of Arizona. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Taliesin West was designed and built by Wright in 1937 and still acts as the home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The home and gardens are open for tours.
Shopping in Scottsdale
Scottsdale is a top city for shopaholics as there are many different places where you can enjoy shopping here. Old Town has its boutiques and gift shops, though you’ll also find enclosed shopping malls too such as the Scottsdale Fashion Square. Big names like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Gucci, Tiffany & Co, and Burberry are all situated here.
When Should You Visit?:
The arid climate in Scottsdale means the city is warm and dry throughout the year, however, summers are just too hot for some visitors! July’s average high is a scorching 46C. Even May and September have average highs in the mid to high 30’sC. Winter is usually the most popular time to visit Scottsdale because the temperatures are far more bearable. In January the average high is a pleasant 20C, or come in the spring when temperatures are several degrees warmer.
