Tempe is an attractive city with a range of geographical features that set it apart from the surrounding cities. Several buttes (hills) sit on the outskirts of the city centre and if you feel like climbing to the top you can get some great views over Tempe and beyond. The newly completed Tempe Town Lake is another feature, and it’s becoming one of the top attractions in Tempe.
Tempe Town Lake
This newly built reservoir is up to 3 kilometres in length and as well as providing water to the city it’s the focus of much of the city’s activities and events. Tempe Beach Park sits on the shores of the lake and provides residents and tourists with a place for walking, cycling, skating etc along the 8 kilometres of paths that can be found here. There’s a kids splash park that’s very popular if you’re visiting Tempe with children.
Out on the lake you can enjoy an assortment of activities, from sailing to kayaking, fishing and more, while throughout the year the park plays host to a number of events such as music festivals, Oktoberfest, New Year’s Eve, and Fourth of July celebrations.
Tempe is home to one of the largest shopping malls in the state of Arizona, called Arizona Mills. This huge indoor shopping mall has around 200 stores and includes many famous names. There is also an IMAX cinema and multi-screen cineplex here, plus the usual places to eat and drink.
A different shopping experience can be had at Tempe Marketplace. This is an open air shopping centre that features some big name big-box stores such as Pier 1 Imports, JC Penney, and Old Navy, and they’re combined with restaurants and entertainment which includes live music on a stage and a huge cinema that has 604 seats and has played host to several world premieres.
Petersen House Museum
For change from the shopping and outdoor activities that Tempe has in abundance you can visit the Petersen House Museum. This is a restored Queen Anne style house from Victorian times which was built in 1892 by one of the first settlers of Tempe.
