The Tourist Attractions in Riverside:
Tourists who are looking to experience a variety of attractions in a relatively sizeable Southern Californian city will find that Riverside is a great place to visit. Riverside may be relatively unknown in international tourism circles, but it’s a very attractive city. Among the things to see and do are the following:
Mission Inn
The historic Mission Inn (now known as The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa) is both a top hotel in Riverside, and a famous landmark. This beautiful hotel was built in 1902 in the Mission Revival Style and is considered to be the largest of its type in the United States. As you would expect, this renowned hotel has played host to many famous names over its history including Albert Einstein, Nancy and Ronald Reagan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
If staying the night is out of your budget you can still visit this historic inn. There’s the Mission Inn Museum from which you can enjoy guided tours of parts of the hotel and look at exhibits, or you may like to dine in one of the several restaurants within the hotel.
During the period running up to and beyond Christmas, the Mission Inn is at the heart of the Riverside Festival of Lights; a beautiful display of lights around the downtown area.
Museums in Riverside
In addition to the Mission Inn Museum, Riverside has a good selection of other museums to visit too. There is the Riverside Art Museum, situated within a historic building that was formerly the YWCA, and this has varied exhibitions throughout the year. A museum of a different kind is the California Citrus State Historic Park. Riverside was the birthplace of the Californian citrus industry and this state park preserves some of these historic citrus grove landscapes. The park also includes a visitor centre where there’s a museum showing visitors the history of the citrus industry in California.
Riverside Air Show
Though Riverside’s airport isn’t suitable for flights to Riverside from international destinations, the Riverside Municipal Airport does host the city’s annual air show that takes place in March. Here you will enjoy aerial performances and displays of aircraft, cars and military vehicles.
When Should You Visit?:
Riverside has a mix of semi-arid and Mediterranean climates so it’s warm all year round. Summer is the hottest and driest time of year with average high temperatures of above 30C from May to August. The winters are mild too, though from January to March significantly more rain falls.
