On a flight to Tampa, you’ll be arriving at the Tampa International Airport (airport code: TPA) which is just 6 miles (10km) outside of the city. There are public buses and taxis to get you into Tampa from the airport. British Airways is the only carrier with a 1-stop flight to Tampa from South Africa, with a connection in London. Both Virgin Atlantic and South African Airways also offer routes, but with 2 connections, in London and Chicago. Air France will take you via Paris and New York.

The Tourist Attractions in Tampa:

There aren’t many cities around the world that can offer quite as much for so many tastes as Tampa does! This is a destination that you could quite happily spend several weeks in, visiting the many attractions or simply relaxing in the warm Floridian sun.

Tampa Museums
Tampa offers a variety of excellent museums which are great for visiting on a hot and humid afternoon to escape the heat! The Tampa Museum of Art is one of these and it focuses on fine arts from the 20th century as well as antiquities from Greek, Roman and Etruscan times. If modern art is more your thing you can visit the Salvador Dali Museum a little way outside the city in St Petersburg.

The Museum of Science and Industry is one of Tampa’s most renowned museums. It’s famous for its huge 250 IMAX domed cinema and also offers the city’s planetarium.

Ybor City
One of only two National Historic Landmark Districts in the state of Florida, the historic district of Tampa is called Ybor City. Ybor City is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities making is a great place to walk around and soak in the lively atmosphere. By night this is one of Tampa’s top nightlife spots with its many vibrant bars and clubs, plus there are some excellent restaurants and shops here to enjoy too.

Themed Attractions in Tampa
Theme park enthusiasts will know that Tampa is home to Busch Gardens. This large theme park combines wildlife of Africa with thrilling roller coaster rides, children’s rides, and family shows. There are also several water rides at Busch Gardens while just across the street is Adventure Island, a large water park.

The Lowry Park Zoo is one of Tampa’s top family attractions, featuring over 2,000 animals, plus for marine life there is the Florida Aquarium with over 20,000 species of aquatic plants and animals.

Nearby Beaches
The great thing about visiting Tampa is that you can enjoy the city and the nearby beaches. There are miles upon miles of beautiful white sand beaches running along the Gulf of Mexico, all within easy reach of Tampa, perfect for those days when you want to relax!

When Should You Visit?:

Tampa is popular for visiting throughout the year with its humid subtropical climate. Summers are popular even though this is the city’s rainy season and thunderstorms are frequent – June to September are by the far the wettest months, though also the warmest with an average high temperature of 32C. If you want to avoid the daily rain showers and thunderstorms visit the rest of the year when average high temperatures range between 21C and 31C.
