Flights to Gulfport

image of GulfportMississippi’s second largest city is Gulfport and it’s situated in the far south of the state. As a tourist destination Gulfport doesn’t have as much to offer as some other Southern cities, but it’s a nice place all the same, featuring white sandy beaches and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The airport serving Gulfport is the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (airport code: GPT), and most flights to Gulfport from Johannesburg will have 2 connections. The exception is Delta Airlines who offer flights to Gulfport with only one stop in Atlanta. You can also book with South African Airways for a route that goes through Frankfurt and Atlanta, or go with Continental and stop in Sao Paulo and Houston.

The Tourist Attractions in Gulfport:

Gulfport was badly hit by Hurricane Katrina, destroying large parts of the city. Rebuilding has obviously been taking place but still the city isn’t quite what it once was. Even though this isn’t a city that’s big on tourist attractions it’s a nice place to visit and has a relaxed and welcoming Southern atmosphere. You can enjoy great food, beaches, golf and more…

Gulfport Beaches
All along the Gulf of Mexico are beautiful white, sandy beaches that are never crowded and make for a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon, enjoying the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the warm southern sun. From Beach Boulevard you’ll find many excellent beaches for example, or take a trip over to Ship Island

Ship Island
There’s a ferry that leaves from Gulfport Small Craft Harbor taking passengers to Ship Island, and this is definitely something all visitors to Gulfport should do. If you want to enjoy a great beach Ship Island is the place to do so as it was named one of the USA’s top ten beaches! Enjoy the beach by taking along a picnic and staying for the day or catch some waves on a surf board.

Island View Casino Resort
For adult entertainment probably Gulfport’s top attraction is the Island View Casino Resort. This large casino features all the popular table games and over 2,000 slots if you fancy your chances! In addition there’s live entertainment of some kind or other every week and of course a bar with cocktails and more to enjoy.

Dining in Gulfport
Gulfport is a great place to come for good food, being most famous for its seafood. Fish are brought into the ports daily and the common favourites include tuna, flounder, snapper, shrimp and grouper. But if fish isn’t your thing there are many other very tasty cuisines available in Gulfport too. Try some of the local specialities such as Cajun foods, or Southern cuisine, and you’ll even find International cuisine restaurants here too.

When Should You Visit?:

Being situated in the Southern United States Gulfport has a warm Southern climate that’s hot and humid, particularly during the summer. From April right through to November you can expect average high temperatures of between 20C and 32C. January is the coolest month but with average highs of still around 14C it’s not exactly cold! Gulfport is a wet city though, and rain should be expected throughout the year; July is by far the wettest month.
