Situated just north of the centre of the US state of Utah is the city of Provo. Provo is the third largest city in the state and is about 70 kilometres (43 miles) to the south of Salt Lake City. Though less famous outside of the United States than Salt Lake City, Provo still has several attractions of its own to offer visitors to the city.
You won’t be able to get a direct flight to Provo, so plan to arrive at the Salt Lake City International Airport (airport code: SLC) instead. You can rent a car or catch a shuttle to Provo from Salt Lake City. Flying with British Airways, South African Airways or United Airlines will take you through London and Denver for your flight to Provo. Delta offers some variation with a route that transfers in Atlanta and Chicago.

Utah Lake
The largest freshwater lake in Utah is located just west of Provo. This isn’t a particularly good lake for swimming in but it does have some great fishing and you can explore the lake by boat or be more adventurous and do it by parasail!
Mount Timpanogos
Provo is part of the Wasatch Front, a string of towns and cities that lie along the Wasatch Range mountain range. This means there are plenty of mountains nearby to the city with the opportunity for many different outdoor pursuits. Mount Timpanogos is one of the range’s most prominent mountains and is just north of Provo. This mountain is popular for its very scenic hikes, and if you hike far enough you’ll see one of the permanent snowfields!

If the talk of snow has you excited, come to Provo in the winter and visit nearby Sundance Ski Resort, owned by Robert Redford. During the summer this is also a destination for mountain biking.

Seven Peaks Waterpark
The largest water park in Utah is here in Provo. Open during the summer, this water park is great fun for all the family, whether adult or child, as there are 16 water slides, a huge wave pool and more to enjoy!
Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University is a private university owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and tours of the campus are available to the public. Amongst the things to see here is the Harrison Arboretum; an attractive area that includes tress from both the eastern and western parts of the USA.
When Should You Visit?:
It’s best to decide what you’re coming to Provo for before you decide when to come as there are advantages to coming at any time of the year! During the summer the weather is fairly hot. July is the hottest month when the average high temperature is 33C. Rainfall is possible throughout the year, but not usually excessively. During the winter Provo is a relatively cold city, and temperatures will be lower in the surrounding mountains if you’re coming here for skiing. The average high in January is 2C.
