Virginia Living Museum
Newport News is not short of museums and the Virginia Living Museum is one of the most popular in the city. This is an outdoor living museum so it’s essentially a cross between botanical gardens, a wildlife park, an aquarium, a science museum and a planetarium, providing some elements of all of these. This makes the Virginia Living Museum popular with visitors of all ages as there are so many different aspects to it.
The Mariners’ Museum
The Mariners’ Museum is another popular Newport News museum and it is said to be one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. There are about 35,000 artefacts here from maritime history, and not just local, many are international. There are miniature model ships, figureheads, engines, artwork and more to see.
Virginia War Museum
Located in Huntington Park in Newport News is the Virginia War Museum which focuses on military history from 1775 to the present day. There are weapons, transportation, uniforms and more, and even a piece of the Berlin Wall.

Newport News has a fairly mild climate so it’s a city that you could easily visit at any time of the year. The warmest weather is during the summer months and although rainfall is fairly high across the year, July and August are unfortunately usually the wettest months as well as the warmest. Spring and autumn would make nice seasons to visit as the temperatures are pleasant. The average high in March for example is a warm 18C, and in October 21C.
