The Tourist Attractions of Nepal:
For a relatively small country, Nepal has quite a diversity of attractions which make this a leading tourist destination.
The Himalayas
Nepal is dominated by its mountains – the Himalayas constitute the northern part of the country which contains eight of the world’s ten highest peaks. The most famous of these is also the tallest, Mount Everest. This makes Nepal hugely popular with mountain climbers and hikers interested in seeing Mount Everest up close and personal!
For those visitors who wish to see the Himalayas but not necessarily immerse themselves, there is an excellent place from which to view them, situated about one hour from Kathmandu. The hilltop town of Nagarkot offers spectacular views of the Himalayas, which even includes Mount Everest on very clear days. In addition this is a lovely place to spend a few days enjoying the hiking in the surrounding pine forests. An alternative to this is the small mountain village of Daman which is said to have the only uninterrupted view of the whole of the Himalayas. Again this is a lovely place to spend a few days enjoying the hiking, cycling and rock climbing of the area.
Annapurna Circuit
Keeping with the mountain and trekking theme, the Annapurna Circuit is one of the most popular trekking circuits in the world, in addition to hundreds of other treks within the Annapurna region. The Annapurna mountains are popular because they are more easily accessible than the Himalayas.
Royal Chitwan National Park
The Royal Chitwan National Park is in Central Nepal and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can see a diverse selection of eco systems and plant life as well as take part in safaris with the opportunity to see some great wildlife, including rhinos, tigers and elephants.
Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal. The major attraction here is the wonderful architecture, including historic buildings and temples. Amongst these is Swayambhunath which is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the country and it also has excellent views over the city.
Also see the Boudha Stupa, another impressive and sacred Buddhism site and the popular Kathmandu Durbar Square. This is an ancient square at the centre of Kathmandu and has a number of buildings to visit as well as the Kathmandu Durbar Square Museum.
When Should You Visit?:
Nepal is a country of great variety in terms of the weather – there are five seasons, and five climatic zones across Nepal. The seasons experienced are Spring, Summer, Monsoon, Autumn and Winter and the climate varies from tropical right through to Arctic as the physical elevation increases, so the weather really can be completely different from one side of the country to the next! Obviously the wettest time to visit would be during the Monsoon season.
