Kaolack Flights:
Flights to Kaolack
The city of Kaolack is in western Senegal, not too far from the border with the Gambia. The city is in good proximity to see much of Senegal’s countryside and to see the natural sights of the area. Most people in Kaolack will speak French but also possibly Wolof, Fula or Maninka.
The Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport (airport code: DKR) in Dakar is the closest arrival point for flights to Kaolack, and it is about 165km away. Many buses stop in Kaolack on the route between Dakar and Bamako, so it should be very easy to get there from Dakar. You can get a flight to Kaolack from South Africa that arrives in Dakar with South African Airways for a non-stop route, or get one connection in Lagos with Arik Air.

The Tourist Attractions of Kaolack:
Sights of the City
There is little to see right in Kaolack itself, but the large city mosque and open-air market are two spots that are worth visiting without leaving town. The market is filled with vendor tables and locally grown fruits, nuts and vegetables, as well as bright fabrics and household goods. You might also see some livestock for sale too.
Saloum Delta National Park
There are main roads that will take you south-west from Kaolack but you may need a 4×4 to get directly to the Saloum Delta National Park as there are few maintained roads for the end of your trip. The delta region is at the mouth of the Saloum River and it is an important ecosystem for the area. Some parts of the park are forested, but most is wetlands, mangroves and other intertidal zones. You’ll see huge flocks of waterbirds, and there are also big populations of turtles, manatees, and dolphins. Farther inland there are colobus monkeys and small duiker antelope.
Other Local Forests
If you don’t want to make the trek to Saloum Delta, there are several other forest areas closer to Kaolack (though they are not maintained or protected areas). Just across the river to the south is the Koutal Forest and the Koyon Island Forest. Kousmar Forest and Velor Forest are also within a very short distance for some additional landscapes to see.
Dakar
You might want to take a drive to Dakar for a day-trip, or tour the city when you first arrive at the airport. Either way, it’s the capital of Senegal and the largest city in the country. Many of Senegal’s main museums are in Dakar, and there is also a small zoo to see local wildlife. The Sandaga market is a great place to do some shopping and see the people of Dakar.
When Should You Visit?:
If you want to find the coolest times to see Kaolack, you should plan your trip for August or September when it only reaches 33C (91F) during the daytime. It may also rain a little more during this time of the year, but even that will be minimal from a tourist’s viewpoint. For the rest of the year, you can expect hotter weather with a peak in March, April and May. Then it can easily get to 40C (104F) in the day. Nights will be cooler at any point of the year as well.
