The Tourist Attractions of Denmark:
Copenhagen
The capital and largest city of Denmark is Copenhagen. This popular city has long attracted tourists and has a variety of attractions and things to see and do. Copenhagen is situated on the east side of Denmark’s Zealand island and is connected to nearby Sweden by an impressive road bridge, one of several which connect the islands and the mainland of Denmark.
Attractions include museums, such as the Museum of Copenhagen, the Bakkehus Museum, Ny Carlsberg Glypotek which features sculptures from Roman, Egyptian and Greek times, and the Carlsberg Brewery tour. In the historical centre of Copenhagen is the Indre By (downtown) area which has many historical buildings and includes some of the aforementioned museums in addition to many others.
Billund
The city of Billund will be well known by fans of Lego, as this is the home of Lego and Legoland! Billund is located on Jutland (the Danish mainland). The city does not have too much other than Lego of appeal to tourists, though there are a few hotels and restaurants here, and of course Legoland’s own hotel and places to eat.
Ribe
Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark and features the Ribe Viking Centre – a popular attraction which recreates what the town was like in Viking and medieval times. Also in the town is Ribe Cathedral which its views from the tower, and the ruins of Ribe Castle.
Elsinore
Kronborg Castle is the main attraction in the town of Elsinore. This was the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet and there’s a museum about Shakespeare inside the castle. The castle itself is very impressive and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Odense
Odense is the largest city on the island of Funen, and is best known as the birthplace is fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen and hence attractions include a museum in his honour and a garden commemorating the author. Odense is also a lively city with a number of other attractions too including beautiful houses and quaint streets in the old quarter, plus night life and shopping.
Bornholm
The island of Bornholm is quite a bit further east than the rest of Denmark’s islands. This is known as ‘the pearl of the Baltic’ and is a popular summer holiday destination. There are sandy beaches, forests and beautiful coastlines as well as a number of man-made attractions too.
When Should You Visit?:
Denmark has a temperate climate with mild to warm summers and cool winters which never usually get too cold. There are four distinct seasons here. The average high temperatures in Copenhagen for example, are 20C in July and August and 2C in January.
Denmark has a lot of wind, and rains an average of 121 days per year. If you’re visiting in the summer remember that Denmark can have very long days with hours of sunshine maxing at 18 hours on 21st June.
