The Tourist Attractions of San Francisco:

San Francisco is a relatively large city and has many attractions, though here are the ones you won’t want to miss.

Fisherman’s Wharf is one of San Francisco’s most popular attractions. Once a fishing port, it is now full of excellent seafood restaurants, shops and museums. It’s good just for walking along and enjoying the view or watching street performers. There’s plenty here to keep you occupied for a whole day, including an aquarium, navy ships and a submarine as well as historic vessels too.

There are many piers in the Fisherman’s Wharf area where you can take boat trips around the area. In one of these boat trips you will get close to Alcatraz but can visit the island using only the designated service. The amazing thing with taking a boat trip is that it can be lovely and clear one minute, then the next you’re surrounded in fog, but then that’s San Francisco for you!

Talking of Alcatraz, this is top of most people’s lists and is definitely worth the visit because the old prison is fascinating. If you go to Alcatraz on a good day you get amazing views of the whole Bay area including the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. Watch a movie like ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ before you go as it makes the experience so much more real!

Back on the mainland, the best way to get around is on one of the famous old San Francisco cable cars. These run on three lines going up and down the steep streets and are a must for all visitors! Some of the views going down the hills and looking out to Alcatraz are amazing!

San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest in North America and is also said to be the largest in the world outside of Asia. Many cities have small Chinatowns with a few shops and restaurants but the one in San Francisco is huge and is like a different world. Explore the streets and be sure to check out some of the smaller streets too because you get a taste for how people are living here. There is a fair amount of poverty, but it’s fascinating watching people playing Mah Jong and having animated conversations. The majority of restaurants here are excellent too and there’s certainly plenty of choice if you enjoy Chinese food!

When Should You Visit?:

San Francisco enjoys a relatively mild climate all year round, with only a small average temperature fluctuation between summer and winter. This makes it a great city to visit at any time of the year, however, winters are wetter. July and August are the driest months, whilst bizarrely September is the hottest with an average high of 21C (70F). In January, the coldest month, the average high only drops to 13C (56F), whilst the average low is a very bearable 7C (46F).
