South Africa’s neighbour to the north east is Mozambique, a country which has a large Indian Ocean coastline and is popular with visitors for a variety of reasons.

The Tourist Attractions of Mozambique:
Maputo
The capital and also largest city of Mozambique is Maputo, situated just north of the border with Swaziland. The city features historic and colonial architecture including a Railway Station designed by Gustav Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower. As you might imagine, this is an impressive building!
Maputo’s other attractions include the National Art Museum and the Museum of the Revolution. The latter describes the story of how Mozambique gained independence from Portugal.
Maputo also has its share of beaches, making this a good city to base your stay in Mozambique. However, some of the best beaches in the country are a distance away from the capital, and these are described below.
Inhambane
Several hundred kilometres to the north, along the coast, is the town of Inhambane. If you’re journeying this far from Maputo, Inhambane is well recommended as it is considered to be one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique. Its location on a bay makes it very picturesque and the ideal place to spend some time relaxing.
Beaches and Scuba Diving in Mozambique
As already mentioned, Mozambique has some fabulous beaches, but it is also a great destination for scuba diving too.
South of the capital, though not very accessible from the city, are two of Mozambique’s most popular beaches, Ponta D’Ouro and Ponta Malongane. In addition to the beaches, Ponta Molongane has great scuba diving and great surf, and swimming with dolphins tours are available.
More accessible than the above is Tofo Beach. This is a great beach with a small town, but because it is more accessible it can be much busier. However, the place still has a small town feel to it because large scale tourism development hasn’t taken off yet.
Further north is Vilanculos, another great beach destination and gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. A national park and conservation area, the island of the Bazaruto Archipelago are very beautiful. The corals around the islands are part of the marine conservation area too, so access is restricted.
Gorongosa National Park
If you want to experience some of Mozambique’s wildlife, Gorongosa National Park is becoming an increasingly popular place to do so. Many of the animals were killed in the 1990’s, though a programme of restocking is now taking place especially for white and black rhinos. The habitats are equally as important here, and the safari camps make for convenient places to stay.
When Should You Visit?:
Mozambique has a tropical climate with just two seasons, rainy and dry. The dry season is between April and September and is by far the better time to visit. Although the beaches will be more crowded during the dry season if you come in the wet season (October to March), many of Mozambique’s visitor facilities could even be closed.
