Flights to Atakpame
Though it is one of the larger cities in Togo, Atakpame is a very rustic town that only has basic services and the roads are not paved. Attractions are minimal though there are some things to see outside of the city. Atakpame is in south-central Togo, and most people in this area will either speak French or German.
There are no local airports immediately nearby for flights to Atakpame, but the main Lome-Tokoin Airport (airport code: LFW) is in Lome, and about 150km away. To Lome, you can get one-stop flights with either Ethiopian Airlines or Air France. The first one stops in Addis Ababa and the second in Paris. Lufthansa will offer a flight to Atakpame that goes another way, with stop-overs in Frankfurt and Brussels. On average, most flights to Atakpame are around 24 hours long.

The Tourist Attractions of Atakpame:
Kamina Ruins
Though not quite as historic as some ruins you might find in Togo, at the Kamina Ruins you can see what is left of an old German military base. It’s a bit of an unusual site, with large concrete pylons that used to hold radio antennae towers, and large pieces of machinery have been left to rust.
Nangbeto Dam
A hydroelectric dam is about 45km away from Atakpame, where you can see the large lake formed by the dam. At some points of the day, there are often hippos in the water for a little added interest.
Local Forests
Though they are not officially protected parks, there are several named forests near Atakpame that offer some lovely green space for walks or exploring. There are two to the south of the city, and they can be reached by some of the smaller roads. The Mont Halto Forest and the Tchiela Monata Forest are closest but there are several others if you want to go farther afield away from town. Lake Mangbeto is just to the east of the city and would give you another natural place to sight-see.
Lome
The city of Lome is about 3 hours away from Atakpame, heading south. You will either start in Lome when you arrive at the airport, or you could take a great day-trip to the capital after you’ve already seen Atakpame. There is a lot to see and do in Lome, not to mention the added options for shopping and dining. There are also better bank services. The National Museum is not very large but there are many interesting historical and cultural exhibits. To see some of the local culture in person, spend some time at the Grand Market. It’s a large indoor bazaar filled with produce, handicrafts and clothing. And if you prefer to take a bit of a walk on the wild side, the Akodessewa Voodoo Market offers some unusual vendors and souvenirs.
