The Tourist Attractions in Arizona:
Nicknamed the Grand Canyon State it’s easy to figure out what the top tourist attraction in Arizona is! It’s also easy to forget that Arizona is a large state and actually offers far more than just the Grand Canyon so is worthy of a lengthy stay to see all that it has to offer.
The Grand Canyon
Known throughout the world, the Grand Canyon really is as spectacular as it looks in the photographs though until you see it in person you really can’t appreciate the sheer size of it! Not only is the Grand Canyon a National Park, it is also protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and spans a width of anywhere between 4 and 18 miles (6.4 to 28.8km). Even when you are standing at the rim it’s still difficult to conceive the size – from the rim down to the Colorado River is over a mile (1.6km). Hiking down, or joining a pony trek to the bottom of the canyon is popular though during the middle of the summer is not recommended due to the intense heat experienced at the canyon base.
Arizona National Parks
As well as the Grand Canyon National Park there are two others in Arizona, Petrified Forest and Saguaro.
West of the city of Tucson, Saguaro is an ideal place to see some of the spectacular desert scenery which Arizona is so famous for, plus cactus plants are in abundance here. Petrified Forest is an unusual place where ancient trees once grew. Their remains have now become petrified into minerals.
Some other popular natural attractions in Arizona which are not national parks include Monument Valley. Situated in both Arizona and the neighbouring state of Utah, Monument Valley features monolithic rocks and desert scenery and is one of the most famous landscapes in the USA.
Cities in Arizona
The largest city in Arizona, and also the capital of the state, is Phoenix. Phoenix has really grown over the last few decades and is now the 5th largest city in the country. The city has also grown in popularity with tourists too and is very well known as an excellent golfing destination.
Amongst the other popular cities in Arizona is Tucson, the second largest city in the state. Mesa is another, plus Flagstaff and Scottsdale, each with something unique to offer.
When Should You Visit?:
Although much of Arizona is desert and is renowned for being hot this doesn’t necessarily mean the whole of the state is hot all year round. There is quite a variation in elevation across the state so some higher positioned places will be cooler than those lower down. The Grand Canyon is a good example of this. During the summer it can be very hot, but in the winter (because it is high) temperatures can be quite cold here and snow is common.
