The Tourist Attractions in Connecticut:

The state nickname of Connecticut is the Constitution State and it’s so named because of the state’s participation in establishing the United States of America. As you can imagine then, Connecticut has lots of interesting historical attractions.

Hartford

Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and although this is a small city there are numerous interesting buildings to see. The Connecticut State Capitol Building was built in 1878 and is a national historic landmark which is made of marble and has a gold dome! You can tour the building all year round.

The first of Connecticut’s state capitol buildings, the Old State House, is still standing and is one of the oldest in the country having been built in 1796. Other historic buildings include the Mark Twain House and Museum where the famous author lived for some years, and the Governor’s Residence which is a mansion built in 1909.

Hartford also has several museums on offer including the Museum of Connecticut History and the first public art museum in America, Wadsworth Atheneum.

New Haven

The city of New Haven is probably best known as being the home of the world famous Yale University. This is also a very attractive city, though very residential in nature. Tours of Yale University are popular and there are a number of things to see within the university grounds including the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Other Towns and Cities in Connecticut

The city of Norwalk has a renowned aquarium on offer, called the Maritime Aquarium, and also popular is the Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum. This is a history town so there are many things to see as you walk around.

The oddly named village of Mystic is also a popular place to visit and is best known for the Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium, but the whole village has on old quirky feel to it that’s worth exploring further!

Natural Connecticut Attractions

Although only a small state Connecticut does have a variety of natural attractions too. These include nice beaches, islands, state parks and forests. Amongst these is Rocky Neck State Park which has a bit of everything – beaches, camping, hiking and more.

When Should You Visit?:

Despite its small size the climate in Connecticut does vary across the state as it’s influenced by the proximity to the Atlantic. Summers are generally very pleasant here with temperatures in the mid to high 20’s C during June, July and August. Spring and autumn are less predictable in Connecticut as the weather can change quite suddenly, but autumn is well known for the beautiful ‘fall’ colours on the trees. Winters (December, January and February in particular) are cold.
