The Tourist Attractions in Illinois:

Best known for the huge sprawling city and metropolitan area known as Chicagoland, Illinois does actually have more to offer than just cities, despite the fact that this is what most visitors come here for!

Chicago

As well as being the largest city in Illinois, Chicago is also the largest city in the Midwest. It’s a vibrant place with so much to see and do that most visitors come here and never leave the city to see the rest of the state. In fact most visitors don’t even get past downtown! Museum lovers will be in their element here as there are plenty to visit. There are tall buildings such as the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Center, with great views of the city.

Chicago is very well known as a great place for shopping. Navy Pier is one place you can do this, plus this new entertainment area features restaurants, museums, amusements and more too. Many visitors head for the Magnificent Mile though. This stretch of exclusive stores rivals London’s Oxford Street, or Paris’s Champs-Elysees, and also has over 200 restaurants to choose from!

Springfield

Chicago may be the largest city, but Springfield is the capital of Illinois. Visitors interested in American history will find this a good city to visit because of the attractions based on its most famous resident, Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site for example is popular. Lincoln lived here for 17 years and the house is a wonderful step back in time to 1860. The four block area surrounding the home has also been refurbished to make it look like it would have done in Lincoln’s day.

Other Lincoln attractions include Lincoln’s Tomb where the former president lays, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. You may also lie to visit the Old State Capitol whilst in the capital of Illinois.

Other Attractions in Illinois

Illinois is one of the few US states that does not have a National Park as such, and some visitors may find the scenery is a bit lacking here in comparison to some of the spectacular places in the USA. However, if you want to get away from the cities there are several state parks to enjoy in addition to the Shawnee National Forest. Many outdoor pursuits can be enjoyed here.

When Should You Visit?:

Illinois has quite a varied climate influenced in large by its proximity to Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes, plus its central position in the North American continent. Most of the state however has a humid continental climate giving hot and humid summers and cold damp winters.
