The Tourist Attractions in Indiana:
Indianapolis
Located in the centre of Indiana is the state’s largest and capital city, Indianapolis. With a population of around 785,000 people it is the 12th largest city in the country and is best known for motor racing in the form of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Visitors will find a good assortment of attractions in the capital of Indiana, from historical to modern. Landmarks include the Indiana State Capitol which was completed in 1888 and is available for tours. Memorials and monuments include the huge Indiana War Memorial, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial. There’s also an excellent selection of museums here too.
Sports lovers will enjoy a visit to Indianapolis as there’s a variety of different spectator sports on offer here depending on the time of year.
National Parks Attractions in Indiana
Along with several other US states, Indiana is one of the few not to have a National Park, but it does have several properties administered by the National Park Service. These include natural attractions, such as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and Hoosier National Forest which both feature hiking trails, and Indiana Dunes has some lovely beaches too.
Other National Park sites include George Rogers Clark National Historical Park located in the city of Vicennes. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial may also be of interest.
Indiana State Parks
Indiana does have several state parks which will appeal to visitors who want to enjoy the great outdoors. Brown County State Park is very popular in the autumn for its fall colours, and throughout the year it has some lovely views. Horse riding, hiking, fishing, mountain biking and more are all popular here.
Turkey Run State Park is another popular one. The landscapes here are varied to much of the rest of Indiana as there are sandstone cliffs and canyons, plus a variety of wildlife, birds and flora to see.
When Should You Visit?:
Most of the state has a climate classified as humid continental, but there are some differences in the far reaches of Indiana. For the most part visitors should expect to find hot and humid summers with temperatures in the high 20’s to low 30’s C (mid 80’s F) in July and August. Spring and autumn can be very pleasant in Indiana, whilst winters are cool to cold.
