Flights to Namibia
Located in Southern Africa, Namibia is to the north west of South Africa and has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The fact that Namibia is very close to South Africa, plus the variety of natural attractions, the English and Afrikaans speaking population, and use of the South African Rand and the Namibian Dollar, makes this a great destination for South Africans.
International flights to Namibia will land at the Hosea Kutako International Airport (airport code: WDH), located 45 minutes east of the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. Flights to Namibia from South Africa are available with either direct or indirect routes. Airlines such as South African Airways, British Airways and Air Namibia offer direct flights. Alternatively these airlines also provide one and two stop flights which may be more affordable if you’re travelling on a tighter budget.

The Tourist Attractions of Namibia:
Windhoek
Right in the centre of Namibia is the capital and largest city, Windhoek. This is an attractive city, and although it’s the starting point for a visit to Namibia for many travellers, it’s not exactly full of tourist attractions. Landmarks include the attractive Lutheran Christ Church, which was started in 1896, and is next to the Parliament Gardens. This is a small and picturesque park that also features a statue of Hosea Kutako, a Namibian nationalist.
Overlooking the Parliament Gardens is Tintenpalast, meaning Ink Palace. This is the seat the Namibian legislature, National Council and National Assembly. Other places to visit include the Roman Catholic church, St Mary’s Cathedral, and nearby to the city is the Daan Vikjoen Game Reserve.
Swakopmund
Visitors who are interested in enjoying some of Namibia’s beaches can head to the town of Swakopmund. This is a very popular destination with Namibians, and in addition to the beach the town has some great colonial German architecture to appreciate.
National Parks of Namibia
Namibia has an impressive total of seven national parks, each covering a variety of landscapes and attractions.
Namib-Naukuft National Park is within reach of Windhoek. This is Namibia’s largest national park, and the largest game park in Africa. It is in the Namib Desert, and despite the desert conditions there are actually many species to see here. Jackals, hyenas, snakes, geckos and more, plus the ancient sand dunes can be both spectacular and beautiful.
Etosha National Park is the second largest in Namibia. This is set around the Etosha salt pan, a large area which is usually dry except for a short period when it fills with water in the summer. During this time it attracts many animals and bird life, including flamingos and pelicans, and black rhinos.
Other Parks in Namibia
As well as the seven national parks Namibia also has several other parks and reserves. Included in these is Fish River Canyon Park. Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and features rocks which have been similarly eroded to those in the Grand Canyon. You can also visit Waterberg Plateau Park, which has very good wildlife watching opportunities.
When Should You Visit?:
With the Namib Desert along the coast, and the Kalahari Desert in the east, much of Namibia is desert and has a very arid climate. It is hot and dry throughout the year, with little or no rainfall.
